This file contains population estimates, number of deaths, crude death rates and age-adjusted death rates for the 10-top state-level causes of death (2020 ranking) by sex, race/ethnicity for Illinois and its counties from 2008 to 2020. The population data used to produce this file are the pre-2000 single race categories also known as the National Center for Health Statistics/National Vital Statistics System vintage population estimates. Death data are from the Illinois Department of Public Health Vital Records System’s certified death certificates. To ensure a thorough de-identification of the data, numbers of death that are less than 10 are suppressed and crude rates are not computed. Furthermore, to ensure statistical reliability and prevent misleading comparisons of age-adjusted rates due to random variations, age-adjusted rates are not produced when number of deaths are less than 25. The age-adjusted rates are computed using the direct standardization method and the U.S. Census Bureau’s population projections for the year 2000 (Current Population Reports, series P-25, no. 1130, Table 2). All rates are presented per 100,000 estimated population in specified groups. In 2020, Illinois registered 132,701 deaths of which the top-10 causes of death accounted for 75.2%, including Diseases of heart (20.7%), Cancer (18.1%), Covid-19 (11.8%), Unintentional injuries (5.4%), Stroke (5.1%), Chronic lower respiratory diseases (4.1%), Alzheimer’s disease (3.5%), Diabetes (2.6%), Kidney disease (2.0%), and Influenza/pneumonia (1.8%). The percentages are based on the total number of deaths. Abbreviations are: M = Male, F= Female, H= Hispanic, NHW = Non-Hispanic White, NHB=Non-Hispanic Black, NHO=Non-Hispanic Other races.
